Anetta Mona Chişa *1975
Lucia Tkáčová *1977
the Republic of Slovakia
The artist-duo has been together since 2000 and uses performances, installations and videos, often in a playful, humorous manner to question gender issues and the achievements of feminism in our society. Although they play about with clichés their works have historical, economic and philosophical fundaments.
The two photographs from Mona Chişa & Lucia Tkáčová each show the rear-view of a young woman who is walking along the middle of a road. These are the photographers themselves, who with their fashionable appearance – they are wearing short skirts and high-heeled shoes – reflect the contemporary view of the prototype of the young Eastern-European woman, as a means of demonstrating the way in which political and economic transformation processes change peoples’ habits. The ‘City-Look’ contrasts strangely with the deserted hilly landscape through which the road leads. However this slight irritation is the key. The place where these two women are walking is irrelevant in the long run; it could be any of the 14 Danube countries. What matters is what they are doing: Making their way with confidence into the unknown.
